PEERS is an internationally renowned and evidence based group therapy to support people to learn and practice social skills. For young adults aged 18 - 35 yrs of age, each week new skills will be taught and practised, including:
The course is either 16 weeks (inclusive of four week dating skills) or 12 weeks (no dating information) and each week builds on the skills learnt in the weeks before. There will be a minimum of six people in the group and a maximum of eight to make sure you get the individual attention you need as well as plenty of opportunity to work with the others in the group.
Each participant brings along a social coach (can be a Support Worker, friend, parent or sibling) to the sessions. They have a separate training session so that they can provide support and encouragement during the week to help the skills get put into practice in the community.
Although mainstream social skills are being taught, each person's individuality will be respected and content adjusted to support differences. The purpose of the group is not to try and change who the participant is, but to offer the participant choices and knowledge to help them navigate social situations.

Speech for Life is in the process of planning the following groups. Keep checking back for more information on when they will be up and running.
Primary Progressive Aphasia support group. For people living with PPA and their support person. The group will cater for support people in one room and people with PPA in another, so that information can be shared and skills gained in a friendly and all inclusive group.
PEERS® monthly catch ups. The PEERS® programme helps participants find a source of like minded people who could become friends. In Nowra, there are less opportunities and groups for people to join. To cover this gap and provide young adults with a fun monthly group to keep practising their skills and building their social confidence, Speech for Life will run a monthly group in Nowra. Members will decide what they want to do during the group (e.g. play board games, watch a movie, go to a cafe, cinema, place of interest etc). Social skills and inclusion will be practised and supported.
